Lip balm holder sewing supplies needed:
- Cotton fabric – one outer fabric piece measuring 4.5″W x 7″H – my favorite fabric shop
- One lining fabric piece measuring 4.5″W x 7″H
- One outer fabric piece measuring 3″W x 2″H
- Cutting mat
- Rotary cutter
- Clear ruler
- Fusible interfacing – Pellon P44F Fusible Interfacing
- KAM plastic snap and setting tool
- 1″ Split ring
- Marking pencil
- Sewing scissors
- Sewing machine
Measure and cut your fabric

Using your cutting mat, clear ruler, and rotary cutter, cut one outer fabric piece and one lining fabric piece each measuring 4.5″W x 7″H. Cut one outer fabric piece measuring 3″W x 2″H for the small strap.
Attach the fusible interfacing
I’m using Pellon P44F Fusible Interfacing for this lip balm holder keychain but you can use any lightweight interfacing.
Attach the fusible interfacing to the wrong side all fabric pieces following the package instructions.
Make the lip balm holder strap
Place the strap fabric piece wrong side up on your ironing board.

Fold in half with the short ends together and press along the fold.

Open back up and fold the outside edge to the center and press the fold.

Turn it around and fold the other outside edge to the center and press.

Fold the strap in half again and press.

Sew along each folded edge using 1/8″-1/4″ seam allowance.

The above picture shows the sewn strap.
Baste the strap to the lip balm holder

Slide the strap through the split ring and fold in half.

With the outer fabric piece right side up, place the strap, with the ring towards the inside, 3.25-inches from the top of the fabric. Clip in place.

Baste the strap to the outer fabric piece.
Round the top corners
Now you are going to round the top two corners of both the outer fabric and lining fabric pieces.

Place something round (I used a lid but anything with a round base will work) about 1-inch from each top corner. Trace around the curve using a marking pencil.

Cut along the marked curve using your sewing scissors.

The above picture shows what the lip balm holder keychain should look like at this point.

Sew it all together

Place the lining fabric piece on top of the outer fabric piece, right sides together.

Sew all around using a 3/8″ seam allowance, leaving an opening at the bottom for turning. Sew over the strap a couple times for extra durability.

Clip the bottom corners using your sewing scissors.
Turn right side out

Turn the lipstick case keychain right side out, pushing out the corners, and press.
(You can find my instructions on how to make your own mini ironing board here. And here’s where you can find a mini steam iron to go with it.)

Top stitch along the bottom to close the opening.

Fold the bottom up 2-inches and press the fold. Pin or clip to hold in place.

Top stitch around the top and sides. Be sure the side edges are lined up. See above picture. Press.

The above picture shows what your keychain should look like at this point.
Attach the KAM snap

For this lip balm holder keychain, I’m using KAM plastic snaps. The KAM snap has four parts – male, female, and two caps.

First, you’ll need to find the middle of the flap – fold the flap in half and the fold will be the middle.

Make a hole in the flap for the snap using the awl tool.

Use the KAM setting tool to apply one cap and the male snap piece to the keychain flap.

Close the flap and mark where the other side of the snap should be placed. Use the awl tool and setting tool to apply the other cap and the female plastic piece.
Press one more time.
Pin for later!
