Sewing hacks are so helpful. I wish I knew these sewing hacks when I first started sewing!
If you are a beginner and just learning to sew or if you have been sewing for a while (like me), there are always ways to make your life easier and more organized. I found these sewing tips really do help me and thought they might help you as well!

Use a rubber band to sew a straight line
It’s easy to sew a straight line if you are using one of the lines on your sewing machine but what if you are sewing something wider and can’t see those lines? Put a rubber band around the arm of your sewing machine! It stays in place and you can use it to align your fabric.
Sewing clips instead of pins for leather or vinyl
Pins will put holes in your vinyl or leather. Sewing clips will hold the leather in place without the holes! I was so happy when I discovered these clips! Binder clips work just as well – I just never seemed to have enough of them. 🙂
Pin your fabric horizontally
When I first started sewing, I would pin my fabric along the edges and had a really hard time removing them! Then a big light bulb went off in my head – turn the straight pins so they are horizontal when sewing so you can pull them out right before your needle reaches them! I use the Dritz Color Ball pins. The color balls makes the pins much easier to handle.
Toe separators to store bobbins
This one is a great idea! I had my bobbins I use all the time in a dish next to my sewing machine and it was just a mess! Toe separators will keep the bobbins neat and organized – and they are super cheap!
Hair straightener to iron between buttons
Get the wrinkles out between buttons on a shirt easily by using a hair straightener! Perfect for the spaces too small for your iron! Great for when you are traveling and do not have access to an iron.
Hairspray to help thread your needle
The needles I use for hand sewing are pretty small sometimes and it can be hard to see to thread the needle! A trick to make threading your needle easier is spraying a little hairspray or light spray hair gel on the end of the thread. The hairspray keeps the fibers of the thread together tightly so it should slide right through! This works great for threading your needle on your sewing machine as well!
Sharpen your sewing scissors with foil
If your sewing scissors are dull, a quick and easy way to sharpen them is to cut through some aluminum foil a few times. Also, keep your sewing scissors separate from regular scissors and only use them to cut fabric. This will help keep them from getting dull.
Hope these sewing tips and hacks are helpful to you! I know they have really helped me.
