8 Sewing Studio Supplies to Add to Your Collection
In a previous post – 7 Must Have Sewing Tools for Beginners and 5 More Must Have Sewing Tools for Beginners – I talked about the tools every beginning sewer should own. The more you sew, the more projects you try, the more you build up your sewing studio supplies. Here is my list of the sewing studio supplies that I personally cannot live without but are not necessarily on that must have list.

Paper scissors
Paper scissors for sewing? Yes! Only because you need to save your sewing scissors for cutting fabric. Have a pair of paper scissors on hand for cutting patterns and other items so you do not dull your fabric cutting scissors!
Pattern weights
Pattern weights are used to hold down your patterns while you cut – saving you time from pinning and adding life to your patterns. I also use pattern weights to hold down my quilts when sewing my rows together or adding the border.
Tape measure
Every sewing studio needs a tape measure. You might need to measure your waist or inseam. Also, you might need to measure something longer than your cutting mat!
Hand sewing needles
It’s good to have some hand sewing needles on hand in your sewing studio. I use them when sewing up the opening on pillows using the ladder stitch or sewing on a button. Have a variety of sizes. Some fabrics are thicker than others which calls for a bigger needle.
Thimble
The thimble goes along with the hand sewing needles. Sometimes you might be sewing a thicker fabric and it’s hard to push your need through. A thimble will get the job done!
Fusible interfacing
I definitely recommend fusible interfacing as part of you sewing supplies, The type of interfacing will depend on the type of sewing projects you like to sew. Interfacing is a must have for me and if you like to make handbags or things like that, you definitely need some interfacing for stability and durability. There are several different types of fusible interfacing (some types are sew in). I use the Pellon P44F Fusible Interfacing for my memory t-shirt quilts and Pellon 911FF Fusible interfacing for all my handbags and accessories sewing projects.
Zippers
As you can see, I have a ton of zippers in my sewing studio! Zippers are cheap enough to buy in bulk so having some on hand is always a good idea. You might want to add a zipper pocket to a handbag or make a little zipper pouch!
Sewing basket
I started off keeping all of my sewing supplies in a sewing basket. Now I use it to store some of my extras like buttons, needles, thread and scissors. And it’s portable! Sewing baskets make great gifts for beginning sewers.
